Tooled (Or is it carved?) Saddle!

A thread came up on the BLAB the other day and people were discussing their methods of tooling. I had to play with that, once I'd heard how a few people do it. I'm still
working in the dark, so to speak, but this is what I did last night:

It's still very rough in places, especially around the rigging cutouts. Fortunately, those will be covered with fenders!

New Sales Pieces

I finished up two sales pieces today and thought I'd post them here. You can find them on MH$P under the vendor A. Kirby.

I've also developed an obsession with laced reins. I did my first mini pair a few months ago when I made a set for WeeJay and I decided to try them a little bit smaller. It turned out wonderfully! I use a single strand of regular embroidery thread, lightly waxed, for my lacing.

First up is an eventing/jumping set made for the G2 Thoroughbred. It's definitely suitable for lower level cross country and some show jumping. It includes heidi style boots and, gasp! Laced reins! I do mean laced, folks! Not braided, laced! I've listed it for $70PPD.

And then the grand disappointment...I made this set just to have an excuse to do another set of laced reins, I enjoy them so much. What I didn't realize is that the leather I was using really had too strong of a grain. The problem is that I didn't realize until the saddle was nearly done. I'm advertising it as PSQ, though I think it could handle a more relaxed live show setting or definitely a novice division. Breaks my heart, though, because aside from the grain it's gorgeous. The shape of the tree is perfect and the reins - stunning ;)

It's listed for $65PPD

PUP's: Positively Useless Projects

I don't have any pressing orders right now, so I started a Positively Useless Project earlier this week. I finished it last night:

A stablemate scale stall and tackroom! They're two separate "rooms" so, should I get crazy in the future, I can add more stalls to it or rearrange. My building materials were balsa wood, craft sticks, and lots and lots of hot glue. The door actually slides, though it's a little rough. I haven't figured out how I want to make a latch yet, or do the feed/water buckets and suchlike.

These aren't completely useless; Janet Skybova of JS Custom Tack made a neato tack room diorama of her own that she uses for photos sometimes. That's what inspired me to make mine. You can check her Traditional scale diorama out at her website, http://www.jscustomtack.net/

She's Done!

I got my little molly mule painted up! I'm really pleased with her. Her paint job's a tad rough, I know, but that's the fault of my prepping job. Since this girl will likely never see a live show, I'm okay with that :)

She still needs a name though. I had originally decided to call her "Muffin" but it just doesn't fit her. Any suggestions?

Back to Work

I spent the morning cleaning, and my studio space is ready to be dirtied up again! I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. May is a crazy month for us, with birthdays and other events nearly every weekend. That cuts into my studio time and when that happens, I get crabby! Just a few more weeks and I should be able to settle back into a routine.

In other news, I bought my first mule! This may be the start of a glorious obsession. I'm still trying to think of a name, but this girl will be getting a soft chestnut paint job. Doesn't she look adorable under saddle, though? She's modeling my current WIP, a jumper saddle intended for the G2 Warmblood and eventual sale.

Making An Effort

Things are going really well, well enough that I keep forgetting to blog! I'm going to make an effort to keep up with this as my main source of news, so bear with me :)

Top news is that I've finished all of the commissions on my work bench right now and have a box or two ready to ship out! I've also updated the western and english galleries on my website. I hope to have the customer photo gallery taken care of soon too!

Speaking of which, if you have some of my tack I would LOVE to add your photos to the gallery! Send me an email or post a comment on the blog if you would like to submit your photos.
